Lemonade

Naomi has been asking to do a lemonade stand for weeks. I'm convinced that there is an ingrained desire that draws kids to this concept. Make a quick trip around town on any summer day, and you will always find kids sitting by their tables or wagons selling this tasty beverage.

We decided to make ours different (and teach the girls about being generous) and offer lemonade and cookies for free. Naomi and Selah, and their friends Julia and Sophia who helped, had a blast! They were excited to serve their "customers" and so disappointed when people just drove by. However, the girls quickly learned the power of waving and yelling.

What was most interesting to me was the overall response. Apparently, we have a real problem as a culture with our inability to receive. A friend, whose daughter did the same thing in her neighborhood a few weeks ago, warned me that this would happen. There were people that drove by with a honk and wave, people who stopped just to give money that we didn't take, people who insisted on paying because they couldn't just receive and enjoy, and there were also a few cars of people who wouldn't even make eye contact, assuming that we were selling stuff, I guess.

The neighborhood kids were my favorite. Most came over to ask how much, and when we said free, their faces lit up. And guess what, they received! In fact, several kids came back for more lemonade and more cookies, multiple times. Awesome! It was the adults who had the most trouble. What does that say?

The girls can't wait to do it again...and again!
