One Year

Happy birthday, Naomi! It's hard to believe that it's been a year already since you were born. And what a year it has been! Life is much different now, and much better. We love you so much!

New tricks: walking is now the main mode of transportation, dancing to music, sign language for "more," carries items (especially phones and remote controls) around the house, gives hugs and kisses on request (sometimes).

Vocabulary: da-da, ma-ma, up, uh-oh (plus very near to mastering several other words we've heard once or twice such as "ball," "apple" and "puffs"). She understands far more than she can verbalize.

Cal and Naomi picked me up for lunch today, and we're going to celebrate her birthday together on Friday (she doesn't know it's her birthday, anyway). Pictures and more details to follow.

Vacation

We just returned from a very hot week in Hilton Head Island, SC. We drove down for the wedding of some good friends of ours, and had decided that we'd stay afterwards for a week of vacation since we'd have driven so far. On the way down I made the overnight drive in about 11 hours, stopping only once before getting breakfast just off the island. Caffeine and a good audiobook were my overnight companions.

We'd rented a house for the week and shared it with several friends (and their kids). We passed the week leisurely, walking on the beach, swimming in the pool and exploring the island. One highlight for me was deep-sea fishing with the guys on the trip - the four of us chartered a fishing boat and caught enough Spanish mackerel to feed our families, and we all caught sharks, too. Three of the four of us caught small reef sharks, while Josh caught a 4-foot blacktip shark (all were thrown back to the sea).

Naomi was unsure of what to think of the beach at first, and was initially kind of scared by the ocean. She soon learned the joys of playing in wet sand, however, and her fears quickly dissipated.

Sorry for the drought of posts lately. Here are a bunch of vacation pictures to make it up to you.

The New Gig

Today was my last day here.

Later this month I'll be starting here as the producer for our weekend services. I'll be on a team set up as an in-house creative agency, and I'll be working with our artists, designers, musicians and speakers to bring to life innovative "experiences" each week. I wasn't actively looking for another opportunity, but this one found me and I'm excited to try something new and very different.

Update: here's a relevant article from this week's CityBeat.
